Why did you start yoga? I went to my first class when I was 19 because I wanted do a headstand. From that first class until I did finally manage was a total of 4 years. It took me one year of consistent practice plus 3 years of sporadic self-practice. When I unrolled my mat at home I mimicked the poses displayed in an old hatha yoga book. There were no online classes to guide new yoga students. There was not even youtube back then—can you even imagine?

I joined my first yoga class for purely physical reasons, but when I was 22 s going through a period of depression I turned to yoga as a spiritual path to lead me to a more peaceful and happy life. Years later I’m still practicing because of that. Yeah, headstand is still pretty cool and I manage to do it nearly every day, but it’s not the physical alone that’s kept me coming back to my mat. The promise of yoga is a healthy body, a happy heart and a calm mind. As a teacher, I’ve seen the same profession in my students. Many people come to the practice because of the attraction to a pose. But the ones who stay for decades of practice do so because they found the spiritual journey of yoga.

It means something to be a yoga practitioner. It’s not just bending, twisting, lifting. To be a practitioner of yoga is to commit yourself to the process of awakening, opening, evolving, becoming—for your own benefit and for the benefit of all beings.
